Answer Engine Optimisation (AEO): A Practical Guide

Answer engine optimisation, usually shortened to AEO, is the practice of shaping content so that AI answer systems, such as AI Overviews in Google, or the answers given directly inside ChatGPT and similar tools, cite your business as the source. It sits next to SEO rather than replacing it, and the two disciplines share most of their groundwork.

Why a citation matters more than a ranking, here

In classic search, being ranked first matters because the visitor clicks through. In an AI-generated answer, the model may summarise your content without a click at all, or offer your business as a named source alongside two or three others. The commercial value shifts from clicks towards trust and brand recall: being one of the few sources an AI system is confident enough to name, in a category you care about, is itself worth something.

What actually earns that citation

Three things consistently help. First, a direct, unambiguous answer to a specific question, stated early in the content rather than buried. Second, evidence behind the claim: a number, a source, a named methodology, or a specific example, rather than a general assertion. Third, consistency: the same facts about your business, stated the same way, across your site, your Google Business listing and any directories you appear in. Models weigh agreement between sources fairly heavily.

A simple way to test it

Ask the AI tools your customers actually use the exact question one of your key pages is meant to answer. If your business is not mentioned, read the sources that are. Nearly always, they answer the question faster and more plainly than the page you were hoping would get cited. That is usually the whole fix. If you want a second opinion on where your own site stands, our performance marketing and AI search team run this exact audit for clients across India, the UK and the US.

Same direction. A bigger tomorrow.
