Google Ads vs Meta Ads: Which Should Get Your Budget First?

Comparing Google Ads and Meta Ads as though one is simply better than the other misses the more useful distinction: they are built to capture different kinds of demand, and the right first budget depends on which kind of demand your business currently has more of to work with.

Google Ads captures demand that already exists

Search advertising works by matching an ad to something a person has already decided to look for. This makes it a strong fit for businesses whose customers already search for what they sell, using clear commercial language, such as “emergency plumber near me” or “buy running shoes online”. It tends to convert at a higher rate but is limited by how much genuine search volume exists for your category.

Meta Ads creates demand that was not being actively searched for

Meta’s ad platform works by interrupting a feed with something visually or emotionally compelling enough to stop the scroll, for a product or service the viewer was not actively searching for at that moment. It tends to work better for visually driven products, new categories customers do not yet know to search for, and businesses with strong creative to test, but generally converts at a lower rate per impression than intent-driven search.

A practical starting split

If your product answers a search someone would already type, start with Google Ads and use Meta to build awareness once search volume is close to saturated. If your product needs to be seen to be understood, or serves a market that does not yet know to search for it, Meta usually earns its budget faster. Most mature accounts eventually run both, coordinated rather than run independently, which is how our performance marketing team structures campaigns from the outset.

Same direction. A bigger tomorrow.
