How to Rank in ChatGPT Search Results
ChatGPT search does not rank pages the way Google does, with a list of ten blue links a person scans and chooses from. It retrieves a smaller number of sources, reads them, and writes a summary that may cite two or three of them by name. Getting into that shortlist depends on a different, though overlapping, set of factors to classic ranking.
Being retrievable in the first place
Before a page can be cited, it has to be crawlable and indexable by the systems these tools draw on, which in practice still runs largely through the same web-crawling infrastructure search engines use. A page blocked by robots.txt, hidden behind a login, or rendered only in JavaScript that a crawler cannot execute, is invisible to both classic search and AI search. This is the single most common reason a business is absent from AI answers: not weak content, but content the system never saw.
Being the clearest answer among the sources retrieved
Once a page is retrievable, the model tends to favour the source that states the answer most directly and supports it with a specific, checkable fact, rather than the source that is best written in a literary sense. A plain sentence stating a number, a date or a named process, near the top of the page, competes well against a beautifully written paragraph that takes three sentences to say the same thing.
A realistic first project
Pick the five questions your best customers actually ask before they buy. Check whether your site currently answers each one in a single, direct paragraph a machine could lift cleanly. Fix the ones that do not. That is a manageable first project, and it is close to the audit we run for clients through our performance marketing and SEO work.
