AI Marketing Agency: What to Actually Check Before You Hire One
“AI marketing agency” has become a popular label, partly because it is genuinely relevant and partly because it is an easy claim to make without much behind it. A short set of direct questions usually reveals which is which within a single conversation.
Ask what AI actually does in their process
A capable agency will describe specific, concrete uses: AI-assisted research at scale, automated first drafts that a senior person then edits and takes responsibility for, or AI-driven analysis of ad performance data to surface patterns a person would take longer to find manually. A vague answer about “using AI across everything we do” without a specific example is a meaningful warning sign.
Ask what a human still reviews, and why
The agencies producing genuinely good work with AI tools are consistently clear about where a person remains responsible for judgement: strategic decisions, brand voice, and anything published under your name. An agency unwilling or unable to describe this line clearly is either not using AI as carefully as they claim, or has not thought about where it should not be trusted unsupervised.
Ask to see AI-assisted work next to fully human work
If an agency is confident in their process, they should be comfortable showing you both, and explaining honestly where AI genuinely sped things up versus where it produced something a person had to substantially rework. An agency that cannot or will not make that comparison honestly is probably using the word “AI” as a sales term rather than a real part of their process. Our own AI automation and operations work is built around exactly this kind of honest split between what AI accelerates and what a person is still accountable for.
